Alia Atkinson – The Aquatic Champion

Alia-AquaticChampionWorld-class breaststroker Alia Shanee Atkinson, a daughter of Jamaican soil, created history the moment she became the first black woman to win a world swimming championship title. She heralded the spirits of those who went before her, including Enith Brigitha, a Curaçao native who represented the Netherlands 40 years ago. In an amazing, nail-biting finish, Alia out-touched her competitor by 0.10 seconds to claim the 100m breaststroke title at the 12th FINA World Short Course Championships in Doha, Qatar.
