Cock Tales: Debra Ehrhardt returns to Jamaica

Award winning writer and performer Debra Ehrhardt returns to Jamaica with Cock Tales: Shame on Me! Locals will likely remember her from Jamaica Farewell, the play, which by the way was successfully optioned by Hollywood’s power couple Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks.

This time Debra teamed up with Hollywood director Joel Zwick to boldly present a 80-minute, one-woman play where Debra shares her innermost thoughts about real life, sexual encounters in her inimitable style – with humor and panache. She quickly stated, “There is nothing new in Cock Tales about sex…but, when it comes to overcoming guilt, that is an area where I am an expert. Guilt is something that we have all experienced. It is something that many of us have taught our children.”

It is felt that when people are more fully liberated, themselves from the guilt that strangles the most joyous impulses, they are able to live their lives as more fully realized human beings. While stamina and roots potions like the “front-end lifter drink” are popular island wide, the country of Jamaica tends to be conservative about sex talk especially when done by a woman. Could things have moved further along? Will the audience/Debra be in for a surprise?

Fortress magazine spoke with the show’s producer Michael Dawson who said, “The intention of bringing Cock Tales to Jamaica is to offer thought-provoking theatre that resonates with on-island current affairs, such as sex and domestic violence, and to prompt much-needed conversations about taboo topics.”

To sweeten the pot, Hollywood director Joel Zwick – best known for My Big, Fat Greek Wedding and a plethora of successful eighties television shows such as Full House, Prefect Strangers, Family Matters and The Jamie Foxx Show – will be in attendance opening night, January 25th at the Jamaica Shopping Club Theatre (formerly Green Gables Theatre), 6 Cargill Avenue, Kingston 10.

Dawson added, “The local audience is in for a memorable evening, a shared journey, really, towards female liberation. There will be signature cocktails, champagne, wine and cheese coupled with authentic Jamaican fare like codfish fritters at the pre-show.” Showtime is slated for 8p.m (Wednesday – Saturday) and 6p.m and 8:30p.m on Sundays and will run until February 19th. It’s perfect for theatre lovers, a girls’ and guys’ night out, Jamaica Farewell fans or just to support a fellow Jamaican in her ever evolving, coming-of-age play.
